Phantom pain after eye amputation, M.L.R. Rasmussen et al

After repeating in Yanoff’s Ophthalmology the exact differences between enucleation, evisceration and exenteration of the eye ( very readable, well illustrated chapter 12.14 by Myron Tanenbaum) I read this while sitting through an evisceration. Interesting operation but certainly nothing for the faint-hearted. We put some ketamin into the GA-mixture, hoping it would somehow safeguard the patient against phantom-pain as discribed in the following chapter. It certainly behoves one to reflect on what measures to take: do the old retrobulbar? Apply Ketamine? Other ideas anybody?
